Pretty Little Liars costume designer Mandi Line described the show’s aesthetic best when, in an interview with CNN last September, she said: “Why be conservative about hemlines and heel heights on a show where a teacher is dating a student and a drunk girl can’t remember if she dug up her friend’s dead body?”
I love Pretty Little Liars. But. The outfits on ABC Family’s geniusly over-the-top show (which comes back tonight!!) are ridiculous. The characters, each of which has her own distinct ‘look,’ go to high school in their small east coast town in outfits that would make more sense in a Teen Vogue editorial.
Sure, most television high school dramas have their students looking a little more put-together than the average 15-year-old, but PLL takes it to another level. Freshly blown out hair, four-inch heels, and Dior handbags are all part of their public high school uniform. Their outfits make Gossip Girl look tame and yet these girls are many miles away from any major city (and should really be more concerned about the person–people?—potentially trying to kill them than shopping).
And people are obsessed. Several Tumblrs are dedicated to the show’s over-styled teens.The show’s stars cover Teen Vogue and Nylon on the reg. So, we thought now, with the show’s winter premiere just hours away, would be a good time to take a look back at its most
